Rev. Mary Johnson
Rev. Mary Johnson,
Assistant to the Bishop for Candidacy and Mobility
The Assistant to the Bishop for Candidacy and Mobility oversees the process by which applicants from our Synod are approved for rostered ministry in the ELCA to ensure that healthy, faithful, competent leaders will be serving our Church in the present and the future. With more and more pathways available for completing the formation needed to become a pastor or deacon in the ELCA, the synod staff member works with the Candidacy Committee and with applicants, candidates, seminaries, congregations and others to coordinate the candidacy process, from the time of initial inquiry and application until the final approval for rostering as a Minister of Word and Sacrament or Minister of Word and Service.
The Assistant to the Bishop for Candidacy and Mobility also works with pastors, congregations and other synod staff in the mobility process, to identify candidates for the bishop to recommend for calls in particular congregations and ministries. Through careful, prayerful discernment we hope to match candidates with congregations that will be well served by the particular gifts, and strengths and passions each rostered minister has to offer.
