Shortly after the end of CONVO 2012, a group of youth and caring adults started meeting to discern the needs of a generation of youth who are coming of age in a time of transition for the church. The result of months of prayer and discussion is a CONVO that has two distinct parts: CONVO Retreat and CONVO: SA (as in "Synod Assembly").
CONVO Retreat was held March 15-18. Thirteen youth and staff, from most areas of the synod, gathered at Vanderkamp for a weekend of worship, prayer, study, service, fun, and fellowship. And plenty of food! One tradition of CONVO is a visit from Bishop Jerge. She wasn't able to join us personally so we brought her into the retreat center via Skype. We all promised to work hard this year inviting more people to this amazing experience in 2014.
Now it's time to register for the second part: CONVO: SA. Congregations are encouraged to elect youth and young adults as their voting members. CONVO:SA is designed to support those voting members who are in high school, as well as high school students who wish to attend Synod Assembly as visitors. There will be an orientation session geared toward youth. As in the past, we will have a CONVO table in the assembly hall where a staff of adults will be present to help youth understand what is going on, consider what they will say at the mikes, and decide how to vote. There will also be a youth break room with snacks and games. Youth will be housed together in the Radisson Hotel, meeting for evening devotions before lights out. Bishop Jerge will lead devotions on Thursday, June 6. Supervision will be provided by adults with the appropriate background checks and credentials.
Youth will arrive on Thursday evening or Friday morning with their congregations and depart on Saturday at the end of the Assembly, again with their congregations.
There is no separate registration for CONVO:SA; please register youth at the same time and in the same way you register other members of your congregation. Be sure to check appropriate spaces regarding age of CONVO: SA participants so we can plan appropriately. Payment is due at the same rates and at the same time as your congregation pays. It is up to congregations to determine who will pay for youth to attend CONVO: SA.

The CONVO Retreat will be at VanderKamp Christian Retreat Center in Cleveland, NY. We'll start at 7:00 pm on March 15 and end at noon on Monday, March 18. Because we will be building an intentional Christian community at CONVO Retreat, everyone is expected to be present the entire time. Registration for CONVO Retreat 2013 is now open. Register online or download the form here. The cost is $150 if you register by February 20, $175 if you register by February 27. HEY, Everybody!! CONVO's coming!! This year's CONVO is being done in two distinct parts, CONVO Retreat in March and CONVO Synod Assembly in June.
The first part, CONVO Retreat, is just that: a retreat for all youth in grades 9-12. It's a time apart to hang out with friends from all over the synod and do all those things disciples do: play and pray; serve and worship; study God's Word and give to God; and encourage and invite others. If you went to the Youth Gathering in New Orleans, this is a time to get together with others who were there and remember the experience. But CONVO Retreat will be a great experience in and of itself.

At last count, 16% of the voting members for the August 2013 Churchwide Assembly are under the age of 30. How cool is that?!? Here's the challenge for the Upstate New York Synod Assembly: meet it or exceed that percentage. Encourage your congregation to elect youth and young adults as voting members to the June 7-8, 2013 Upstate New York Synod Assembly. Please mark the appropriate places on the registration forms so we can keep accurate records. We can meet this challenge!
