You know how they call short people "vertically challenged," or failure as "deferred success." I guess it's meant to protect people's sensitivities. Well, I learned a new PC term. The US Department of Agriculture calls people without enough to eat "food insecure." 2011 set a record for them, 50+ million in the United States, 9 million of them children. (There is also a "very food insecure" category; I guess they're even hungrier.) At the same time, food stamp use is up to a record of 46.7 million Americans.
 
Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation's decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. By changing policies, programs, and conditions that allow hunger and poverty to persist, we provide help and opportunity far beyond the communities where we live.
 
ELCA World Hunger responds to hunger and poverty in the United States and around the world by addressing root causes. Through a comprehensive program of relief, development, education, and advocacy, people are connected to the resources they need to lift themselves out of poverty. Between 70-75 percent of ELCA World Hunger funds are spent internationally, and 20-25 percent are spent domestically.
